Campione d’Italia is an Italian paradise in the heart of Canton Ticino

 
Campione is a small Italian enclave with the area of 1.7 km² with approximately 3.000 inhabitants, of which a third are foreigners, situated on Swiss territory, in the south region of the Canton Ticino. Between Campione and the Italian border there are 18 Km towards the south in direction to Chiasso and 14 Km to the west towards Gandria.
 
The small enclave of Campione is only 7 Km far from Lugano and surely, worth for a visit, it be both for the beautyful landscape of the banks of the Lake Ceresio, and for the ancient artistic tradition.
 
The small town is today an Italian enclave on Swiss territory: it has a Swiss customs regime, Swiss currency and stamps. It is the only one Italian populated area which is free from VAT and that has pushed many societies to establish their seat here.
 
Campione d'Italia is situated on Swiss territory, but is subjected to the province of Como. It is much famous for its Casino not to count for another exceptions and privileges.
 
Great relief in the economy of the enclave comes from the presence of the Municipal Casino. In fact numerous tourists comes here and gamblers who come here for making their bets.
 
The Casino was created in 1917, it was opened solemnly in 1933, being diverted to ground base and the motor of the city, that population of which is today 3000 persons, of which more than 18 % work directly by the Casino in the roulette rooms, baccarat, black jack and slot machines.
 
The money currency is not the EURO, but the Swiss franc even if in the stores you can pay in European currency instead of the franc.
There use Swiss telephone companies, the number plates of the automobiles are of the Canton Ticino, the electricity is coming directly from Italy, but also it is to be paid in Swiss francs to the post branch which is communal. The employees of the post-office, of Casino, of the state schools, the police and the pensioners get salaries and pensions in Swiss francs, and they use a favourable exchange, much lesser than the market quotations.
 
The public health is running by a Swiss health insurance fund, via a tender held in Lombardy. The basic medical services are paid by invoice of the Swiss society while the special services of the local public health branch are refunded from the Swiss health insurance fund.

In accordance with the calculations, the citizens of Campione pay approximately 51% of taxes less than the Italian citizen resident of Italy and this make Campione one of the tax heavens of Europe. The residence permissions are issued from the Italian authorities, but to approach the territory of Campione it is necessary to have a visa (between Campione and Switzerland there is no border) and there is not required to be on the Helvetic military service... in short Campione accumulates all the typical qualities of cleanness and efficiency of Switzerland, joining them to the Italian vivacity.
